Dr. Raúl Calzada León, President of SLEP, joined the podcast “El Microscopio” to share the mission, history and regional role of our Society.
The Latin American Society of Pediatric Endocrinology (SLEP) was recently featured in the podcast El Microscopio, produced by InfoBioquímica, through an interview with our current President, Dr. Raúl Calzada León. His participation offered a valuable opportunity to present SLEP’s history, its mission, and its main educational and institutional initiatives to the broader Ibero-American audience.
Dr. Calzada reviewed the origins of SLEP, founded in 1986 under the leadership of Dr. César Bergadá, and highlighted its ongoing commitment to knowledge exchange and continuous education. He described key programs like the Summer School and Winter School, where professionals in training across Latin America engage in clinical case discussions and share experiences. SLEP also provides full support to selected fellows including travel, lodging, registration and academic participation.
The conversation also addressed SLEP’s active role in the International Consortium of Pediatric Endocrinology and the need to improve access to genetic diagnostics and essential medications in countries with limited resources. Special attention was given to collaborations with global health organizations like WHO and PAHO.
Dr. Calzada also emphasized the collaborative and academically rigorous nature of the SLEP Congresses, which serve as key events for knowledge exchange across the region. These meetings provide a platform for scientific presentation and discussion, with participation from partner societies in Europe, Asia-Pacific and Spanish-speaking communities.
